Toxic Free Living Resources

I get so many questions about where to start looking for information and resources that someone can educate themselves on when it comes to toxic free living. The world around us has become so toxic that our bodies are demonstrating its inability to cope. How? Our bodies are these amazing mechanisms that gives us clues and signs that our bodies are close to reaching its tipping point, and if we don’t soon take action on reducing the toxicity within our homes and our bodies, then it will tip over into a state of disease and illness.

Some of the ways our bodies gives us warning signals that we are nearing the tipping point are (to name a few, and this list is definitely not limited to just these): eczema, psoriasis, sudden allergies (food or environmental), persistent difficulties with sleeping or insomnia, congestion, worsening PMS, acne, loss of mental clarity and motivation, body odour and/or foul breath, difficulties with digestion and muscle and joint pain.

Everything that we are breathing in and that touches our skin gets into our bloodstream and travels throughout our entire body. These products or ingredients in small doses are ‘okay’, however a woman in a typical day uses close to 100 different products and if we are not using clean versions, we are overloading our bodies with toxins and chemicals. This not only contributes to weakening our immune system, but it also contributes to our body’s overall tipping point.

It is said that our homes are 300-500 times more toxic than the air we are breathing outside. This is appalling to me! The place we call home is supposed to be our safe haven, and yet in most cases it’s actually causing more harm than good!

Many people are shocked when they learn that their environment isn’t the only thing that we are polluting. Or bodies suffer just as much as our environments, if not more. By taking action, you can have piece of mind knowing you are working towards feeling better and ensuring a healthier future!

I do have to say, it has been pretty empowering to lead this type of lifestyle. My girls are growing up in a home where they are learning the value of being an advocate of their own health and they are seeing how easy it is to create their own green products in every aspect of their lives. After all, our children do look up to us and want to be just like us! So why not lead by example 🙂

It’s important to note that this whole process can be very overwhelming. Taking it one day at a time and one step at a time will lead you on the path of greater success. Unless you’re an all or nothing person, take one product and start the swap out and continue to swap one after the other until you’ve revamped your environment to meet your needs. This process will look different for everyone! I am always here to answer questions or help in any way I can.

Green cleaning is one way we can take control back of our environment and have a significant impact not only on our health, but in the areas that we encounter on a daily basis. By making simple and effective swaps to all natural and non-toxic products, you can feel confident that when you ditch your chemically filled everyday products, you are having this amazing and positive impact.

The average home spends about $60 each month on cleaning supplies alone and has over 25 different products in their home that they use to clean it with. That’s a lot of money that is being spent each and every month! And you definitely need all those products either. The items I use on a regular basis are: All-In-One Cleaner, Window Cleaner, Tub & Tile Spray, Natural Toilet Powder, and my Norwex enviro cloth…that’s it! Four products to clean my entire home – not 25+! So you can see just by making my own products, I am saving a lot of money.

You can purchase your copy here and start living in an environment that has been cleansed from the products that are bogging us down.

The EWG (Environmental Working Group) is an excellent resource. This is the site I go to for everything!
They have a simple scale they use to grade each product on. Then you can click into each product and it’s broken down by ingredients with further explanations. Each individual ingredient is also rated on this scale. I absolutely love their website and it has been the main source I go to when looking up ingredients and products.

Here is what their rating system looks like. The ingredient hazard score, from 1-10, reflects known and suspected hazards of ingredients. Your goal is to stay in the green (low hazard) range for every product you use:

BODY STUDIES

– You can read about the study the EWG did on the chemicals and toxins found in the umbilical cords of newborns, here. Be sure to check out the chart at the bottom of the article to see the specific chemicals they found in the cord blood and what products you can find them in.
– A more in-depth finding of their results is here. You can find a summary of the test by chemical family as well.
– And here is where you can find an analysis of these chemicals.
– The EWG has even gone as far as creating a list of the top 12 Endocrine Disrupting Ingredients. You can find that here.

FOOD

Food is another area that introduces toxins and chemicals into our body. But there are ways to reduce these! One way is to use the fruit and veggie wash (found in the Green Cleaning PDF) every time you bring home produce. Not only will you be removing the germs from other people handling your food, you will also be removing the nasties off your food! Take a look at the water before and after you put your produce in the wash – you will be disgusted!
– See the full list of the dirty dozen that we are encouraged to buy the organic version of as often as possible.
– See the list of clean 15 that is OK to not purchase organic for.
– When you can, growing your own produce is the best option because you can control all the variables!

SKIN & BODY

– Take the time to search for all of your products that you have within your home. You will be amazed how they actually stand up and what is actually in them! Because if you are like me, I blindly trusted what I was buying and it wasn’t until I started doing my own research into the development of my product line, did I become aware of the hidden ingredients found in the majority of commercial products. A simple search on the internet (i.e. Clorox wipes ewg) will give you the results you are looking for.
– Products to be weary of are hair care products, lotions, deodorants, nail polish, shampoo, conditioner, gel, face serum, face cream, face wash, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, makeup, hand soap, candles, air fresheners, toothpaste, mouthwash, body wash, soap bars and so much more!

EWG Certified

– This stamp is given to certain products that have met the EWG strictest guidelines and standards for health. These products range from cleaning products to makeup. You can find more information on EWG Certified here.

*Decoding Labels on Consumer Products *Note: When they speak about essential oils, they are NOT referring to doTERRA Essential Oils. doTERRA Essential Oils are medicinal grade oils, which are the most pure, most efficacious, most trusted and tested essential oils in the world.

*Many BPA-Free Plastics are Toxic. Some Are Worse than BPA. A shocking article that BPA-free claims may be totally meaningless when it comes to the safety of certain products. These new chemicals are likely not safety tested at all.
*BPA in Cash Register Receipts Constitute Concerning Occupational Exposures. Plastics and canned foods are not the only significant exposures sources we encounter. Cash register receipts fall into this category as well. The powdery feeling on receipts (when you compare to regular paper) is due to the presences of BPA in a powered form. So the transfer to your hands is immediate. The study in 2016 (linked article) examined the urine and blood of cashiers after their shifts and 24 pre-shift employees, and found a spike in BPA, BPS, and BPSIP levels. Wearing gloves while handling these receipts would be an ideal recommendation to minimize their contact with the thermal paper and their exposure to BPA.

I have tried my fair share of products! Especially makeup products. I never used to be much into wearing makeup but in the last year I’ve taken to it a little more and wanted great products that last all day, that if my children touch my face I won’t be worried, and that don’t look like I’m wearing caked on makeup!

FACE

My first absolute favourite is TOKBeauty Mascara!! This is THE BEST mascara I’ve ever used, and the best part it’s all natural! My lashes have never been healthier, they are actually longer, and I only need ONE coat! It’s absolutely incredible. I will soon be a distributor for them on my website, but for now, click the link above to snag yours! She even has these amazing magnetic lashes that give your eyes that extra little something. So for those of you who are missing your lash extensions, this is an awesome alternative! The products I use are:
– Mascara in Black
– Lip Gloss in XO

The next company I love is Elate Cosmetics. They are sustainable, vegan and cruelty free. What I love is that their packaging is also eco friendly! You can compost the bamboo when you are finished with a product or you can purchase the refill piece. Their refills also come in seed paper packaging so you can plant the paper instead of recycling it! LOVE IT! Products I personally use are:
– Concealer
– Pressed Foundation
– Bronzer

My all time favourite facial line to cleanse and prep my skin for the day is the doTERRA Verage line. It’s clean, in the green zone according to the EWG and is infused with amazing essential oils that work wonders for our skin!

HAIR

The ingredients found in commercial hair care products are scary! There’s an abundance of chemicals in these products and it’s stripping away the moisture, texture and composition of our hear resulting in weak and broken hair! Since I switched to the doTERRA Shampoo and Conditioner duo and the Root to Tip Serum, I have not had any split ends, my hair grows like crazy and it’s in the best condition it’s ever been!

These products are free from common harmful ingredients such as SLS, SLES, Parabens, Waxes, Petroleum, detergents and more!
Take a look at a brand I used to use. You’ll see the first word in the list is Fragrance. Did you know that the term Fragrance or Perfume is an umbrella term for over 3,000 chemicals and toxins? That’s right…every time you see the word Fragrance or Perfume in a product, it is laced with chemicals that you are putting on your scalp…which is directly access to your brain!!

Another product I used to use a lot of was dry shampoo. I’m so happy I’ve now created my own, you can find it here, as an alternative! It’s all natural and infused with CPTG essential oils – so you know it’s good for you! Who here is familiar with Batiste Dry Shampoo? Not only is the aerosol harmful to the environment and our lungs, but check out how they rate on the EWG and how their ingredients stand up! Check that out here.  Needless to say, I threw it out immediately once I learned about the ingredients and how harmful they are.

Easy Steps for Detoxifying your Body & Environment

1. Stay Hydrated

Ensuring you are drinking adequate, high quality water, is extremely important. It is recommended to drink half your weight in OZ of water per day. Having a good water filtration system is the key to having high quality water. Yes there’s such a thing!

2. Reduce Exposure

This is one of the key factors in helping to reduce the toxins in your environment. Use the tools you have at your fingertips to research and dig deep into what you are consuming.

3. Exercise

Raising your body temperature is a great way to get your body fired up to help flush out any toxins within the body. Sweating for a minimum of 30 minutes daily does wonder for the body. Make it fun and do something you love!

4. Detox Baths

Taking a warm to hot bath not only helps to raise our internal body temperatures, but added Epsom salts and Bentonite Clay will help draw them out.

5. Supplementation

Proper supplementation is key to keeping the body the body in a state of homeostasis.  My favourite is doTERRA’s Life Long Vitality. Not only are they bio-available (your body knows exactly what to do with them), but they fill in gaps that we are missing from our diet.

Spirulina is also an excellent source of blue-green algae that is effective at binding and removing toxins from the body. I enjoy it as part of my daily drink from Its Blume (The Matcha one is also delicious!

There are also some recommendations to take activated charcoal to help remove toxins quickly. But this should be done under the medical advice of an ND.

6. Healthy Digestion

Ensuring our bowels are in top shape will assist in the elimination process of excreting these toxins and chemicals from our bodies. Eating a variety of fruits and veggies, as well as getting the proper amount of digestive enzymes, will aid in this elimination process.
